Tips on Closet Organization From A Caledon Designer
A closet is a place where it is easy to lose control, leading to lost belongings and lost time. Fortunately, there are some simple steps that you can take to reduce the chaos and bring order back into your life.
1. De Clutter!
Start by reducing the clutter, pull everything out of the closet and if you don’t use it, let it go. A good tip to go by, is if you haven’t worn something in a year, you probably won’t. You can always donate, recycle, upcycle, hand me down – whatever it takes.
2. Placement is Key
Placement is important. Sometimes out of sight means out of mind, so try to keep your closet contents as visible as possible. If something is more often used, it should be placed centrally for easy access. Grouping like items, and sometimes colour groupings can make it easier find what you are looking for. Store off season items in well labelled bins or boxes. Baskets, drawers and dividers all help to separate and organize.
3. Custom Shelving and Storage
Custom shelving makes a huge difference when organizing a small space and there are plenty of options at all price points. Most shelving and closet storage can be adjusted to accommodate your needs and take advantage of your full closet space. Door hangers and organizers are a great way to add extra storage for smaller items and accessories.
Hangers can make a bigger difference than you might expect. Wire hangers tend to tangle and slip, whereas wooden hangers can be bulky and take up precious space. Hanging clothing in the same direction on uniform smooth plastic or velvet lined hangers will take your closet organization to the next level.
A little bit of attention and common sense can get your closet back on track. Think about what makes the most sense for your belongings and your space, and there will be a solution to bring out the best in your closet.
